I am a world citizen: the reasons why millennials choose to travel over settling down

Your friends are very active in posting and sharing about their next travel destinations. Their inspirations in Europe or their adventure in Southeast Asia. It looks very inviting and made you think about your personal goals in life. What is really the reason of most millennials in creating their own path to discovery over settling down?

I was 24 when I first worked abroad. I stayed in Singapore and worked in hotel, 2 years later I quit my job as a manager to work full-time in my business. I decided to move to Indonesia where I met few people doing online job but mostly on their own startup projects.

When I started out on my personal journey it was a risk, I had few back up plans just in case my attempts will not succeed. Within the past 3 years I have met people gave up their corporate career for a one way ticket. Here are the reasons we share;

Living and Discovering Life’s Meaning

Getting married or having promotion at work is no longer the primary goal of millennials. We tend to hold it for a purpose of seeking new knowledge. University books are never enough for us but going to places and seeing how people live, laugh and breath is what we want. We are a generation who want to experience the world first-hand.

We try to avoid making commitments at home because we want to fully get the chance to integrate to the next country or society we will be living in. Finding a job is an option to support us while others chose to work online so they have the freedom to work at their working convenience.

Entrepreneurship

Compared to the generations before us we have expanded our marketplace thus making us grow our ideas of doing a business. We think global and we love to compete in a bigger marketplace.

We are becoming more open minded and welcoming ideas from other entrepreneurs from other cultures. It excites us to do business with multi-cultural environment. Solving a small community problem is no longer the business of our generation but we are trying to make the world our consumers. We want to dominate a bigger marketplace and reach a bigger audience.

New Work Ethics

Living overseas or with diversity allows us to develop new work ethics. We are trying to cope up with the innovations in the internet in order to be part of its growing success. We are becoming multi-taskers who are needing flexibility in our tasks.

Millennials have different work ethics now than the previous generations. For us, it is less important to have a nine to five job and having the freedom to sustain our lifestyle is the new standards. Regardless of having or not having a real office to work.

For example, I do coaching for a marketing company. I consider Starbucks as my office to do trainings and meetings. I organize my own recognition and award program with my marketing team, sometimes our top seller incentive is a Royal Caribbean Cruising experience for a week. I communicate with my sales team through WhatsApp and at times I conduct trainings through Facebook Lives. We also have shared folder like a normal office but we use Box or Dropbox now.

I do not attend BNI groups or Rotary Club to network. But millennials join events organized through meetups.com or expat.com and even find new contacts through dating if not social media apps.

Easier To Find a Job or Business Partnership

The good thing with the millennials is the adaptability. They can easily adjust to new environment and they are driven to win and prove themselves. Though some are leaving the corporate world there are other millennials that are doing well in a new country that they are moving to.

It is easier for them to find a job or even business partnership bringing the knowledge and work experience they have from their home country. Once a millennial choose to work or stay in that country it is when he/she can tell that the self discovery is starting to be found.

Realizing that they do not need to search themselves but they have to create it and moving to places is where it becomes a possibility.

It’s Simple:
It’s easier than ever before with technology. We live in an age where it is possible to connect with people and companies around the world within seconds. The fear of moving abroad can be virtually eliminated by lining up a position ahead of time, communicating with fellow expats, and exploring where you plan to move; all while over your morning coffee.

Acceptance
Millennials may appear complicated but they are not. Yes they have so many ideas or maybe less focus as others judged them to be but they are not. Millennials are looking for an environment where they can practice their gift and be them without being judged.

They want to be understood and accepted. They believe that they have ideas but their ideas are sometimes questioned before it is heard. So they go somewhere people are more open-minded or with like-minded individual.

Your Financial Goals at 20’s

1. Begin educating yourself about personal finance. It was scary but I did not also learn to be more aware of my financial literacy. All I knew when I was to make more and more money. But know what you do not really need a big amount of money before you finally become financially literate. Start studying now or else you make money but you can never keep them.

2. Specify a budget. Oh no your friends are traveling too much and some are partying too much and even shopping too much. So what? For me the best advice I could give you is create a budget of how much can you spend daily? weekly? or monthly? If you can learn to create the limit then you are safe from being trapped to a bad debt.

Let them enjoy but hold your own wallet. You should know how much you can spend, save or waste.

3. Research your health insurance options. I am guilty again on this. I remember buying my first Macbook, it was insured and someone asked me if I am insured. Sad reality we want to secure our wants versus the need. My best advise? Make sure not to wait for your 40’s before you buy an insurance. Remember the early you start the smaller you pay and the better benefits you can choose and enjoy.

4. Create an emergency fund.
You know want their might be a recession tomorrow or next month or I don’t know and let me ask you – any emergency fund on hand? It’s scary right? What if you will lose your job today, can you survive? Save a little amount and be consistent.

5. Avoid credit card debt. I had really bad experience with this and my best advise? Never to use credit card unless you can pay it. By the way I never used credit card for so long now – no obligation and I don’t spend more than what I make. Please do not believe in enjoy now and pay later mentality.

6. Track your credit score.
 Oh yes! I cannot disagree.

7. Don’t forget your retirement account. Just because you have an emergency fund or savings account then no need of retirement fund? No! Save a little and be consistent in doing so.

8. Plan your debt repayment for any loans. Do it! Can’t you just live loan free? 🙂 Ok I got it but please try to settle your loans and as soon as you pay it never to get a loan or make it your last option. Avoid borrowing money or lending money from or to a friend too. Money is money – it can ruin beautiful relationship. So please avoid it as much as possible.

9. Find another source of income. So you are paid well? Good but don’t be dependent in one source. It’s about multiple sources of income. Trading your time over money will never give you the freedom you desire. You can end up losing from inflation and running the rat race for your most sacred bills. You don’t want that right?

10. Practice bargaining. I love to bargain. It’s an art of negotiating. Whatever you buy ask for a discount or ask this – can I find something with the same value at the same or lower price? Don’t be ashamed you are just being smart with your money.

Starbucks have membership card where you can havefree Grande in each 10 transactions maybe time for you to register for that. Try including some deals on travels too – later I will share where or how I bargain for my trips.

You can bargain online or face to face. Try it. It’s fun.

11. Know where you are going financially.
So sad again, not all people are willing to prepare for that financial goal. Don’t be scared – preparation is better that being surprised by the sky rocketing bills and responsibilities like hospitalization or even children’s education.

Is Multi-tasking a Weakness or Strength for Millennials?

“When you hear about time management millennials are bad at this. They lack the discipline to be on time, they do not have focus and they get bored easily.” This will be a possible description we will get from other Baby Boomers.

As millennial I must say we are maybe just good at it – not in time management but with multi-tasking. So what is multi-tasking? What made us multi-task?

In my description, it is doing different things at almost the same time. We read while we watch TV, we write while we watch news, we call our friends while we cut our nails and so much more.

On the bigger picture we multi-task when we try to keep our jobs while doing other extra-curricular activities. We stay at our job while we are looking for another job or doing another part time business.

Multi-tasking is not only doing things at the same time, it can be doing extra commitments while we have other priorities. Now another question is can it help us? Is it a weakness or a strength?

It depends.

It becomes a weakness when it makes us not perform at our jobs or deliver what is expected from our role. Submitting your report late because you were busy with other commitments or maybe your startups could be a weakness – it can lead to frustration and feeling overwork.

On the other hand, millennials are really good at multi-tasking. They are creative and even contribute more to their workplace through the experience they acquire outside work or the real life experience as they call it. We must not limit ourselves from opening our world to the new opportunities to grow. Sometime we are judged for being too distracted or being less focused.

But it is not new to our generation. We are the generation empowered by the technology. We can be our HR, our own CEO or mentor. We become our own leaders as well.

As long as we keep an eye to our goal. We can never call it a weakness of a generation to do multiple tasks and projects in the same time frame.

How Long Does It Take To Make Money in Blogging Part-time?

Depending on the model and how engaging your are to your potential readers, affect how quickly you can start in making money online.

Using the wrong platform, the keywords and the relevance of your title can also make or break the speed.

The reason why your blog is not yet making money could be due to the techniques you use and the number of influencers you are connecting to.

Blogging is one of the easiest way to start generating your online income because it can be easily started and implemented using your existing skill in writing.

It is basically like writing online.

It could be simple yet many people do it wrong.

Simply creating a blog and posting its content and expecting to create followers is not the only step.

We must consider that we are not the only writers online or bloggers. Everyday people create blogs, it could be different to yours but similar to many.

Choosing the right model will determine whether your will have your first check in 3o days or in 3 years.

Most people fail in blogging and delayed their income potentials due to lack of clue about maximizing it’s visibility or increasing the readership.

Anyone can create a blog – no issue, but can everyone earn with the same income? Is a good question to consider.

Or you can take this blog that you’re reading right now for instance.

It’s probably one with the less beautiful layout or – right – let’s be honest.

But guess what?

It’s less than 24 of running this website (from when I started writing this post) … with it’s less complicated layout and small number of photos… I already have readers from almost 10 countries… and already getting offers for monetization.

On the other hand, I also have my other test site which is over 7 years old but is not getting readership nor the income.

Whether your goal is to earn $200 a month or $100,000 a month in blogging it is workable using blogs applied with the correct model.

How much money monthly you make is up to you and the commitment you are putting in.

Some people I know do not count the effort they make in blogging for they know that their is something waiting for them later on. Blogging can be working now and getting paid later.

I am going to share 3 of the techniques to increase your chance of generating a good amount of income in your blog.

Technique 1 : Authority Blogs

Authority blogs are focused on a certain subjects for a specific groups of people.

You become a brand authority people go to when they try to learn about that niche.

Identifying your focus can help you to speed up in building your authority.

Building an authority website needs a constant posting about the subject matter.

Having a post everyday can help you to speed up that credibility.

But if you have your full-time job, you can still be consistent by creating a blog post twice or thrice a week.

Just remember that the most content you make and add, the higher the unique number of visitors you will attract from the search engines.

Having more visitors is very important to your site in increasing your site’s valuation.

Consistently blogging trains the Google bot to keep visiting back to your website more frequently.

So the more content you post, the faster the bot will spider your content and the quicker your site will be indexed and ranked in Google and other search engines.

Technique 2 : Keywords Search

Focus your first 20 posts on the most common buying ready keywords your target audience are using. Research the keywords that generate buyer keyword traffic to your website.

Example:

Travel blogs;

“Traveling to Europe at $50 daily budget”

Career blogs;

“How to be a CEO at 23.”

Healthy and Beauty Blogs;

“Best Adult Supplements”

Buyer keywords are very important. They are typically ready to purchase buyers but are looking for confirmation with their decision. The ads that will appear to your readers in reading your site will show them the most relevant ads on their search history or profiles.

So your content needs to have relevant keywords with what your visitors will search if they are trying to find a solution or formula. If you can unlock on using the right keywords. You will also unlock the foundation to your online cash machine.

Check your keywords from your title and the content itself. Is it relevant to the buying decision of your visitors?

Some would say that having good number of traffic is good but you can choose and decide – do you want 1000 visits but 0 clicks or 100 visits and 100 clicks?

Strategy 3: Viral Titles

If your goal is to just increase your unique visits you can explore on having titles that are viral.

If you want to check how strong your titles are, you can analyze it through this website.

It will tell you about the power of the words you are using – how common, uncommon, strong or emotional your title is.

You need to write your content in an eye catching title so people will give the chance to open it and read it, it is something that people can connect and talk about so they will share it to others.

The more they like you, the more you make them feel you understand them and the more you offer value to them the higher the chance for them to remember your site and follow you.
